There have been some excellent alternate builds or C-Models showing up lately. I'm a big fan of these, as they open up new opportunities for those of us without a huge collection of spare parts, and in my view every one increases the value of the set in question. It's obviously a big challenge for the designer to work from a restricted pool of parts, and it's clear that certain sets lend themselves well to alternate builds. I also get frustrated when I come across a great C-Model topic, which I then can't find again later. So as my small contribution to EB, here is what I hope might become the definitive C-Model index, helping us all keep track of these great models, and in many cases, their instructions.

if you want i can send it to you with a peace of steel cable, some sleeves and 3mm rigged hose. Then you can test it in a build. And if you are ready with the test, you can place the outcome here. As i dont have any sets with these flex cable's, i am not able to test it myself. To prevent damage to the rigged hose, you can put an extra sleeve before the end notch..

I still have the bar code scanner truck assembled on a shelf. It uses flex cables of 5l, 12l and 20l (stud measure). Don't know what size you prepared, but if you have one of the above lengths I can test them in an instant, especially the 12l and 20l as they sit on the outside of the model and are easily reachable. You can send me a PM for address details if you like, or if you do not live to far away I might be able to pick em up at your place…

Making the indentations isn't too difficult, i've done it successfully to create custom length cables and to turn broken ones into smaller sizes. Use a small cutting bit on a rotary tool (dremel) to cut the indentation. It helps to meanwhile mount the cable in a drill and have it rotate around slowly so you get an even cut. The indentation doesn't have to be perfect, or even down to as small diameter as the original cables for the ends to snap on. Simply cutting a semi-circle profile (as opposed to square profile as per factory) seems to work just fine.

Unless LEGO can demonstrate that there is an infringement and that LEGO has suffered a monetizable amount of damages. My guess is that the competing product you see at Target is sufficiently different so as to be discernable by a reasonable consumer. Although, admittedly, I'm not up on my copyright law post-2004.

Those bricks look like the ones sold under the block tech name in the UK - which is the same stuff that sold in some UK retailers under an 'own brand' name. In the retailer Wilkos it is called Blox. As an alternative (and cheaper) brand it is perfectly fine and without these alternatives some children would never get the chance to play with 'Lego'. I don't see a problem with it. In many UK retailers these alternatives are sold alongside Lego and it causes no problems at all.

This is a great set that was a blast to build. The build can be roughly split into three parts, the mechanical portion (basic frame, transmission, steering), building out the frame and the exterior. There are tons of details, like pistons that move when the wheels roll. The instructions are relatively straightforward, with lots of small steps. The real difficulty is more in the organization. Unlike other LEGO sets, the bags are not numbered here and there are many, many small parts. Having an organizer, like a Plano box or three, is almost a requirement and makes the build go much easier. It is a time-consuming build but it's well worth it as the final result is a great model.
If you want to know more details I would definitely recommend checking it out Lego Lepin
